Ms Patsy Asch describes Federal Labor’s attitude to taxation as ‘no new taxes and while you’re at it, get rid of a few’ and declares sources such as mining licences, royalties from coal seam gas and revenue from gambling as good neither for our health nor future (Letters, 23 May).
On moral grounds, I agree with Ms Asch’s implying that gambling on the pokies is bad (and profoundly wasteful). However, taxes on mining licences and the gaining of royalties from coal seam gas exploration are not morally equivalent with raising taxes on poker-machine gambling.
