Drivers still

MOTORISTS are not heeding the level crossing safety message, according to the latest operation figures released by police last week.
More than 45 motorists disobeyed traffic lights at level crossings during a police crackdown in South Melbourne – and the same continues to happen in Yarraville according to concerned residents.
The operation follows a spate of accidents at level crossings in Melbourne, including two at the Yarraville crossing last year.
Sergeant Dean Cooper urged drivers to be vigilant when approaching level crossings.
“Until people get the message, Victoria Police will continue to conduct railway operations to educate motorists on the dangers,” Sgt Cooper said.
“No matter how much of a rush you think you are in, disobeying traffic lights or stopping in the middle of a level crossing can result in death.”
Community members met last night in Yarraville in an effort to raise awareness of their concerns about safety at the level crossing.
Community advocacy group Cross Safe at Yarraville called for ideas and feedback on the level crossing as part of the campaign to find a safe crossing alternative for the Anderson St site.
