Uni seeks end to problem

FOR the fifth year running, Victoria University’s school of computer science and mathematics is running a problem-solving competition for Year 9-12 students.
The head of the school, Associate Professor Pietro Cerone, said the competition was partly web based and partly a written test, and was designed to encourage interest in the disciplines of IT, maths and statistics.
“The competition is free and we invite all interested schools and their students to participate,” he said.Professor Cerone said. “Registration is now open.”
The competition is separated into a junior division for Years 9-10 and a senior division for Years 11-12.
The first stage is a 50-minute on-line electronic test on 29 July, open to all registered students. Students can log on to this site any time between 9am and 9pm and have 50 minutes to complete the test.
For the second stage, students selected on their performance will be invited to the university on open day, Sunday 10 August, at the Footscray Park campus.
“All invited students will be awarded a certificate of merit and be eligible for great prizes including electronic gadgets, book vouchers and university study subsidies worth thousands of dollars,” Professor Cerone said.
To participate in the first stage of the competition on 29 July, candidates need to register online no later than 28 July at http://psc.vu.edu.au/register.
