AFTER arriving in Australia from Afghanistan as a 12-year-old, Jafar Mohseni found himself as a target for bullying.

The Werribee resident started getting in fights and falling in with bad crowds, all while trying to learn how to speak English.

“I went through some tough times and I was getting bullied, especially after September 11,” Mr Mohseni said.

“I had to fight for myself and when you get bullied you get tougher.

“Then when people realised you could fight they would be your mate so you could protect them.

“I had mates end up in jail so I wanted to turn my life around.”

Following his father’s example, Mr Mohseni got into body building and recently opened his own business, Muscle Pump Supplements, in Werribee.

“Any sport works like a kind of discipline and it can keep you away from trouble,” he said.

“With body building almost every single day you are training. It is basically eat, train and sleep.”

In September Mr Mohseni won his class at the Mr Victoria body building championships.

He said the sport was becoming more popular in Werribee and he encouraged more young people to give it a go.

“In Werribee it is definitely getting more popular and because there are a lot of 24 hour gyms now people don’t have any excuse not to train,” he said.

“It makes you a lot healthier and people should give it a try because if you are body building you can’t really drink, you can’t take drugs and you have to get lots of sleep.

“You can still socialise but you have to choose one thing and for me the gym always comes first.”
