WERRIBEE business owners have welcomed a plan that could see a multi-storey carpark built in the city centre.
One of the highlights of Wyndham Council’s proposed 2013-2014 budget, which was unveiled last week, was a call for expressions of interest for the development of a Werribee CBD office and carpark.
If approved, Werribee’s first multi-storey carpark would be built on the corner of Synnot St and Duncans Rd on a site already occupied by a carpark.
Known as the Gateway Site Development, $180,000 has been set aside to put together a team to “take the site to market for private development,” according to the council’s proposed budget.
President of the Werribee Chamber of Commerce and owner of Tonia T Boutique on Watton St, Tonia Tribe, told Star the project would boost economic activity in Werribee.
“It’s an absolutely wonderful thing for the town,” Ms Tribe said.
“As a representative of the Werribee CBD business owners and a business owner myself, all the traders would definitely love to see this happen.”
Ms Tribe said increased parking would only bring positive things to Werribee’s main shopping district.
“There’s just no negatives about it,” she said.
“From what I’ve heard, some component of it will also be residential, so more people living in the city hub will also boost the area.
“I just can’t wait for the first bricks to be laid.”
According to the council’s budget paper the project will act as a “bold statement at the entry to the Werribee City Centre” and enhance the area as the “Capital of Melbourne’s New West”.
