THE Maribyrnong Bulldogs football team is on the lookout for new players with an intellectual disability to join the club.
The team is looking for support for their entry to the state wide Football Integration Development Association (FIDA).
Maribyrnong Dogs recreation programs officer Rodney Gaunt said there were many benefits for players who were part of the team.
“By joining in and playing with the Bulldogs, players are able to develop a whole range of skills and really improve their confidence.
“Everyone gets to play and it’s a great chance for players to interact with others who share their passion for football,” he said.
Maribyrnong City Council disability advisory committee chairman Janet Rice said being involved in the team was a great opportunity for those who loves to pull on a pair of boots and get out on the field to have a kick.
“Anyone can join the team, female or male and regardless of age or ability, though we do recommend a minimum age of about 15,” she said.
Cr Rice said the Bulldogs had built up a great culture of participation, fun and social interaction.
“I’d really encourage parents to enrol their family members and give it a go,” she said.
The FIDA competition was established in 1990 as part of the Victorian Amateur Football Association with the aim of providing a football competition for people with an intellectual disability.
Mr Gaunt said interested players only need a pair of boots, some blue socks, and a pair of blue shorts to participate as the club provides a team guernsey.
The Bulldogs meet once a week on Thursday evenings to train. Training sessions begin at 4.30pm at Kindersmith Reserve, Lily St in Braybrook.
Mr Gaunt said the season has already started but that new players were welcome any time.
