MAIDSTONE’S Al-Noor Mosque will hold its first open day next month.
Mosque attendee Nadeem Hussain said the event was intended to “break the ice” among the wider community.
Mr Hussain said the mosque had not been the target of anti-Muslim violence but saw the open day as an opportunity to reach out to the broader community.
“We want all residents to feel welcome to visit,” he said.
“We will provide information about Islam and what happens at the mosque. It will be an opportunity for main- stream Australians to see that we have nothing to hide inside the mosque – that’s what we want to get across.”
“Part of what we will be doing at the open day is what we as individuals do on a daily basis, which is breaking down negative stereotypes that people may have about Islam and Muslims.”
Mr Hussain said open day visitors would be surprised to see how multicultural the centre was, with members from Africa, India, Pakistan, Croatia and Australia.
The open day, which is being considered as an annual event, will be held on Sunday 12 November from 11.30am at Al-Noor Mosque, 36 Studley St, Maidstone.
The day will include a tour of the building and a sausage sizzle will also be organised
