FOOTSCRAY’S River Nile Education and Learning Centre will receive much-needed financial support from Maribyrnong City Council if State and Federal governments also reach into their pockets.
The council has committed to “in principle” support of $100,000 for the development if money is received from the appropriate government bodies.
The centre was established by the Anglican Church on Paisley St in 2006, although after success and continued growth, the facilities no longer meet demand.
To keep on helping tackle the learning difficulties faced by refugees and newly arrived communities in Victoria’s secondary schools, the centre has sought financial aid to improve the services it offers.
Maribyrnong City Council mayor Michael Clarke said there was an overwhelming demand for more student placements at the school.
‘The River Nile School operates out of the Anglican Church Parish facilities in Footscray and they are in desperate need of an upgrade into a properly functioning learning centre,’ he said.
The centre supports secondary school students and provides general English classes for community residents, in addition to the practical support provided through emergency relief, access to meals, information and support on issues such as housing, income and employment.
