RESIDENTS are being encouraged to sign up to a police register to help make their homes burglar proof over the school holidays.
Residents can leave their details with police by filling in an Absence from Residence form at the Footscray police station.
Footscray Leading Senior Constable Tanya Giannes said the forms were to be filled out by families to alert police when they were going away.
“The system is very simple, all local residents need to do is fill out the form and hand it to us. We will then keep it on file,” she said.
The addresses on the forms are added to regular patrols by police units to keep an eye on the vacated homes.
The absence forms have been in place for some time and Leading Sen Const Giannes said she hoped more families would take advantage of the system.
“As we know, burglars love the school holidays and families going away,” she said.
“We will task our units to patrol at every given opportunity and hopefully scare any potential offenders away.”
Forms are available at all Victorian police stations.
