LESS pollution should reach the Maribyrnong River and Port Phillip Bay as a result of the construction of stormwater pits in the Nicholson St Mall.
As part of the multi-million-dollar upgrades, four environmentally friendly tree pits have been established in the mall.
The pits will harvest stormwater to filter out pollutants before they can run into the bay and rivers.
City of Maribyrnong councillor Janet Rice said in addition to removing the pollutants from the water, the design would channel the stormwater to the pits and allow the nutrients to reach the trees.
“By using these tree pits as a natural filter, we are creating an environmentally friendly system to reach an environmentally sound outcome,” she said.
