GROWING your own plants can be satisfying – and to be able to eat the produce afterwards is an even bigger treat.
Recently, people of varying abilities who attend the City of Maribyrnong’s day-care programs planted the seeds – from which they hope big things will grow – at the Maidstone Community Centre in Yardley Street.
In time, they hope to reap the rewards of the Planting Seeds project, which is being run by the council using funds offered by the State Government’s Department of Human Services.
“This is an amazing project that really celebrates the diversity of our community as people with varying levels of abilities work alongside participants from a huge range of local organisations to grow plants they can later eat,” Maribyrnong mayor Michelle MacDonald said.
“Truly, the garden will help enrich the lives of everyone involved, be it through learning new skills that can be used in their own homes or through improving nutrition by increasing their knowledge on edible plants, or even in the satisfaction of eating home-grown vegetables.”
WestNet, David House and Westgate Community Initiatives Group are also involved.
Anyone who would like to be involved in the project should call Liz Wright, the Planting Seeds project officer, on 9317 0747.
