IN the Navy, the Reverend Rainer Schack will sail the seven seas.
The Footscray Baptist Church minister was saluted in style on Sunday in a final service before taking up a full-time chaplaincy role in the Royal Australian Navy.
Mr Schack, who has headed the Paisley St congregation for more than seven years, was farewelled in a special lunch after the usual 10am service.
Parishoners, colleagues, representatives from the Navy and Maribyrnong City councillor Janet Rice were in attendance as cultural groups gave musical performances.
Mr Schack said he was looking forward to the change of scenery, but would miss the parish.
“I’ve always rejoiced that we are able to have such a diverse group of people come together under the one roof,” he said.
Mr Schack said he expected to be travelling for his first 12 months in the Navy before being posted to a permanent location.
He had to complete two years of reservist training to be eligible for the position.
Fellow Footscray Baptist, the Reverend Ron Ham said his colleague’s warm and engaging personality was a gift that allowed him to relate well with people of all ages and nationalities.
“He’s encouraged the church to celebrate diversity,” Mr Ham said.
“He has this concern not just for the life of the people in the church but for their place in the community, and I think that’s been a very fine contribution.”
The church is still looking for a suitable replacement.
