RODNEY Johnstone has promised to bring Rotary into the 21st century in his maiden speech as Footscray Rotary’s new president.
Mr Johnstone took the reins from 2010/11 president Darcy Brennan at a changeover ceremony at Reggio Calabria Club last week.
Under Rotary guidelines, a new president must be selected each year.
“This is a club of history and tradition … traditions rightfully reflect our heritage, but they cannot mortgage our future,” Mr Johnstone said.
“It’s often a fine line to walk to produce a positive change and respect the past.
“This is certainly a significant role in my life, and I relish the challenge.”
From August, Mr Johnstone will introduce a monthly night meeting to try and attract more members and will also introduce a club for high school students aged 14-18 to get an early taste of what Rotary does.
Footscray Rotary was chartered in 1937 and is the fourth-oldest Rotary club in Victoria.
The club was exclusive to men until the 1990s when women were invited to join.
