Maidstone makeover

THE Maidstone Community Centre’s community garden is getting a makeover thanks to a Maribyrnong City Council supported initiative that aims to engage and increase the skills of unemployed young people.
The National Green Jobs Corp program run by the Westgate Community Initiative Group (WCIG) sees young people learn a range of new skills as they continue to make improvements to the design, aesthetic and assets of the Maidstone Community Centre garden.
Renovations include the creation of 10 new garden beds and individual watering systems; the installation of a new water tank; outdoor garden furniture designed and built; permanent BBQ; and pergola.
Participants are working closely with trainers who guide them as they increase their skills and abilities.
The renovations to the gardens allow the community to grow more fresh vegetables and enjoy the additional space and facilities.
Renovations will continue until February, with an official community unveiling to take place to coincide with the 2012 Harmony Feast on 25 March.
