A GEELONG man who handed $420,000 cash into police has faced court on fraud charges.
Dhirenda Singh, a 38-year-old worker from a Tullamarine shopfitting company, was initially praised by police when he handed a bag of cash he said he had found in a St Albans car park to a surprised officer at Craigieburn Police Station on 26 April.
Police told Mr Singh if the cash was not picked up within three months he could claim it.
It’s believed 10 people contacted police to claim the cash.
Mr Singh last week faced Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on counts of fraud totalling more than $567,000.
He faced 156 charges of false accounting, obtaining property by deception and making a false report to police.
Mr Singh was charged with falsifying cheques and doctoring accounts at his work between April 2004 and March this year.
Mr Singh was bailed to reappear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court in August.
