ST PETER Chanel in Deer Park started an exciting Active After-School Communities (AASC) program last week, is designed to teach primary school-aged children a healthier lifestyle.
The program is Australian Sports Commission led initiative.
AASC metro western 2 regional coordinator Jonelle Burns said while the program had been running for three years, its primary focus was to increase activity and confidence levels in kids aged five to 12.
“AASC is all about children having fun while being active,” Ms Burns said.
“With the program moving into its third year, great things are happening.
“Under the program structure, local sporting clubs and organisations are encouraged to deliver activity sessions that create pathways for the children’s long-term community involvement.”
Children participate in a range of sporting activities, delivered by community coach and Australian lacrosse 2006 open squad member Christian Williams.
Activities played so far include cricket, basketball and hip-hop dancing, while a modified version of AFL, soccer, tennis and martial arts will be introduced later in the year.
The program, which runs from prep through to grade six, encourages healthy eating, with nutritional foods available to all participants before and after sessions.
