Dark times early for Sunshine

SUNSHINE’S poor start to the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association season continued in round two on Sunday when it recorded another comprehensive loss.
Last week it suffered at the hands of Altona at home, and on Saturday – the second of two consecutive one-day matches – it endured a similar fate against Brighton on the road.
While it is early in the season and the important two-week matches are still to come, the Crows already have plenty of ground to make up, sitting at the foot of the table after Saturday’s result.
While last week’s batting display against Altona was one of many positives for Stuart Hensley’s team, the round two effort was ultimately its downfall.
Sunshine won the toss and took the initiative by batting first, but quickly slumped to 3/15.
A crucial 71-run middle order partnership between John Causon (43) and Sunny Singh (34) helped boost the score, but they received little help from their team-mates and the side was eventually skittled for 105 runs.
Between them, nine of Sunshine’s batsmen contributed 20 runs.
Brighton took 27 overs to haul in the runs, and it did so courtesy of opener John Damiano, who batted through the innings and finished on 66.
Hensley and David Bonavia did most of the damage with the ball, taking two wickets each.
The result in the second XI was a complete contrast, with Sunshine posting a nine-wicket thrashing of Brighton.
