RESIDENTS beware: thieves are striking again at stealing water meters.
About 17 meters have been stolen in the West over the past two weeks with five coming from homes in Sunshine and St Albans, Senior Constable Mark Drieberg from Sunshine Police said.
All of the five incidents occurred during the night of 28 December last year.
Because of the rising price of copper, after a quiet year thieves had struck again, Sen Const Drieberg said.
“We hope the public recognises any suspicious activity around water meters. It would be of great help to us,” he said.
City West Water’s managing director, Anne Barker, said the theft of water meters put residents at great inconvenience, because they would be unable to access their water supply and would have to replace the meters – at a high cost.
“In this very dry period, maintenance crews are called away from necessary repairs to replace these meters,” Ms Barker said.
Each meter has an individual serial number that allows them to be identified, she said.
“We are working with police to prevent any more thefts occurring, Ms Barker said.
“But we are asking residents to assist us with this matter.”
