ST ALBANS Heights Primary School is the latest school in Brimbank to launch the Walking School Bus program, which encourages students to walk to and from school supervised by adults on a designated route.
The program is increasing in popularity across Brimbank with nine schools now offering the program, with 16 bus routes and 39 walks per week in operation.
Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the Walking School Bus program was making an important contribution to the health and wellbeing of children in Brimbank.
“This is a wonderful program because it provides students with regular exercise, teaches students important road safety and pedestrian skills, and is a lot of fun,” Cr Giudice said.
“It is also comforting for parents to know that their children will be safe as they walk to and from school.”
More than 55 Walking School Bus volunteers are involved in the program, some of whom have been volunteering for more than two years.
The Walking School Bus program has been successful in helping reduce car congestion around schools.
In response to the popularity of the Walking School Bus program, seven Brimbank schools are now taking part in Walking Wednesdays, an initiative for classes to independently monitor and reward students walking to school.
