CELEBRATING Brimbank’s unique multicultural diversity was the festive theme of a special walk and Harmony Day in Brimbank Park last week.
Descendants of traditional landholders, new immigrants and musicians took part in a special ceremony aimed at increasing public awareness and respect for different cultures.
This year’s national theme of You + Me = Us attracted residents from across the municipality to join a six-kilometre walk through the park.
“Brimbank’s diversity is one of our city’s greatest strengths,” Brimbank mayor Natalie Suleyman said.
“We embrace it and we are very proud of the fact that so many people from all corners of the globe have chosen to make their home here.”
Harmony Day is a national celebration of events and activities promoting community harmony, respect and goodwill between Australians of all backgrounds.
It forms part of the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Descrimination and was held during Cultural Diversity Week.
“Harmony Day gives us a great opportunity to recognise and celebrate our multiculturalism, and it is also a wonderful social activity for walking enthusiasts or families looking for some healthy active and low cost fun during the school holidays,” Cr Suleyman said.
