KEILOR residents will get the chance to ask Brimbank City Council to lease the historic Christ Church in Keilor for community use.
Residents spokesman Kevin Rowles will present the case at the council’s next briefing meeting, suggesting that the council rent the church from a private owner, who bought the building last year, and let the University of the Third Age use the premises.
Mr Rowles said more than 100 residents were consulted on the idea and they all agreed that the church should be used for community use.
The idea surfaced last year before the church was auctioned, and the University of the Third Age anticipated that more than 1000 people would enrol at the church, Mr Rowles said.
Cr Anthony Abate presented the correspondence he received from Mr Rowles to councillors during last week’s meeting, saying it was an issue that was “worthy to note”.
Cr Natalie Suleyman said residents should be given an opportunity to be heard.
“There’s been a lot of pros and cons in relation to the future of the church once it was saved last year and no doubt the Keilor residents will play a very important role in identifying what’s best for the future of the site,” Cr Suleyman said.
