BRIMBANK City Council believes realistic targets need to be set in line with the State Government’s Melbourne 2030 policy in order to meet future growth in the municipality.
Councillors moved at their September ordinary meeting this response to the Melbourne 2030 five-year review. Councillor Natalie Suleyman said lack of funds from the State Government towards the Sydenham Transit City project in last year’s budget, despite the project’s masterplan adopted three years ago, identified the need for the council to send a message.
“I think it’s really important we send the message through our submission that integrated transport strategies and the policy needs to be funded by the state and federal governments,” she said.
“Our infrastructure doesn’t meet the demands of the growth in the future.”
Cr Suleyman said the lack of funds for the transit city predominantly affected the northern end of the municipality.
“When we have major challenges in relation to public transport, health and many other issues that are basic foundations in the community, I think it’s going to be very, very difficult to meet the essence of Melbourne 2030,” she said.
