ALMOST 4000 notices have been sent out by Brimbank City Council this week to remind owners of vacant land of their obligations to keep their properties neat and tidy.
Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the notices were part of an annual mail-out to property owners.
“Each year, the council sends out notices to all vacant land owners for compliance with the council’s General Local Law by cutting the grass and weeds on their property and keeping their vacant land neat and tidy, which includes the removal of any rubbish on the land.
“We encourage land owners to visit their properties at least six to eight times a year to undertake routine maintenance and avoid the possibility of incurring the council cost.
“This is about minimising fire risks and helping to improve the amenity of our streets and neighbourhoods,” Cr Giudice said.
If properties fail to comply with the requirements, the council will order its contractor to undertake the work and cost will be passed on to owners. The cost of the council cutting grass on a vacant block is $280.
Council officers will start inspecting all vacant land on 20 November and should be finished by the end of January. Brimbank council inspects vacant properties and responds to calls about unsightly properties throughout the year.
