Book in time for Literacy Week

AS part of Brimbank Literary week, local residents have an opportunity to attend talks by some of Australia’s award-winning authors, including Alice Pung, this week.
Ms Pung is the author of the best-selling autobiography, Unpolished Gem, which has been nominated for the Age Book of the Year and the 2007 Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards.
Other well-known authors who will be speaking in Brimbank include Leigh Hobbs, creator of characters Old Tom, Horrible Harriet and Fiona the Pig, and Arnold Zable, who will speak about the refugee experience. Brimbank Literary Week 2007 will run during national Literacy and Numeracy Week, 3 to 9 September, and offers residents an opportunity to take part in literary activities.
As well as the Brimbank Short Story Awards, Brimbank Literary Week showcases talks from award-winning authors, storytelling for preschoolers and a rap performance for teens. These will be held at council libraries around the municipality and at Adult Multicultural Education Services (AMES) St Albans.
Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice encouraged residents to take part in the Literary Week activities.
“This exciting event has been introduced for the first time ever in Brimbank,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity to hear some very famous authors speak, ask them about their writing and how they create their stories and characters, and to have a great time.
“I’d like to encourage residents to book in for the sessions. There is something for everyone to enjoy.”
Brimbank Literary Week brochures are available at the council’s libraries, customer service centres, on www.brimbank.vic.gov.au and at the Hunt Club Community Arts Centre, and at AMES, 16 Victoria Square, St Albans.
