OVERNEWTON Anglican Community College is turning to solar power in an effort to go green.
The school recently installed solar panels to decrease its greenhouse gas emissions.
The switch came as Overnewton students learned about energy consumption and climate change as part of their curriculum.
Grade 4 teacher Michael Wilmot said his students tallied how much power they used each day, and what that added to in terms of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere.
“Talking about such issues is one thing, but to take a positive, pro-active approach is another,” Mr Wilmot said.
And the staff and students of Overnewton are not prepared to stop there.
The school plans to incorporate solar panels into its educational campaign to reduce overall energy consumption.
“Solar power will be a strong lead into great educational benefits, with students being able not only to see the panels, but to use the software provided with the installation to continually access the school’s solar energy levels,” Mr Wilmot said.
