Night final announced

THE Western Region Football League has announced it will host a night final this season for the first time in its 77-year history.
The match to be played on Saturday 16 August at St Albans’ home ground Kings Park Reserve will be the second senior’s night game played in the WRFL this season after round one’s clash between St Albans and Albion.
The idea for a night final was born out of necessity with WRFL media manager Kevin Hillier saying Werribee’s Bartercard Oval was unavailable.
“We couldn’t get Chirnside Park (Bartercard Oval) because Werribee are playing their final home game there,” he said. “We had to start thinking of alternatives. I don’t know whose bright idea it was, but someone said why don’t we have it under lights at St Albans.
“So we started the season under lights at St Albans and now we will start the finals in the same way. From what I can gather, the clubs received it well. It’s certainly the first night final in the WRFL and I’d be surprised if we weren’t the first in suburban footy.”
The round one St Albans and Albion clash proved a success with a healthy turnout.
“There was certainly a much bigger crowd than they would have normally got. Reports I heard was that there were probably three or four times the amount what they would normally get. Hopefully we get the same result at the finals.”
