SOARING petrol prices and concern for public wellbeing have motivated Brimbank Bicycle Users Group (BrimBUG) president Ferdi Saliba to push for improved cycling and walking facilities in the area.
Mr Saliba is working closely with Brimbank Council on a new open spaces strategy due to be unveiled in August or September this year.
He hopes it will include plans to link Brimbank’s various bike paths and is keen to see the creation of defined riding lanes on roads connecting the public to shopping centres and transport.
“In Brimbank we have an ageing population and a high rate of people with a predisposition to type two diabetes. In order to exercise and stay fit, these people require good access to riding paths,” he said.
“I’ve also noticed many more people in the area using their bikes since petrol prices have gone up, so the time is right for these improvements.”
Mr Saliba recently worked with VicRoads to ensure cycling and walking access to the Deer Park Bypass, which is under construction.
“We’re hoping for another positive outcome with the Brimbank strategy, but it depends on funding,” he said.
“The Federal Government, State Government and local council are all keen to see more people use their bikes, so hopefully the money will come from somewhere.”
Mr Saliba urged the public to join BrimBUG on its bi-monthly rides that take in the best paths in the local area and can extend to Williamstown or the city.
“There’s really something for everyone. We’re family orientated and there are 15-30km rides for beginners and 70km rides for keener cyclists.”
