The Sunshine Residents and Ratepayers Association (SunRRA) Inc has accused Brimbank Council of false and misleading advertising.
SunRRA’s Darlene Reilly said the group had written to the Department of Consumer Affairs, after receiving complaints from local residents regarding Brimbank Council’s advertising of the annual hard waste service which is being “touted” as “free”.
In local newspapers, including Star, on August 12, full page advertisements state: “Free Annual Kerbside Hard Waste Collection Underway”.
Mayor Sam David is also quoted: “I am pleased to remind residents that Brimbank’s free annual City-wide residential hard waste collection is currently underway. The service aims at offering the community a free and convenient way to get rid of selected material.” Ms Reilly said this advertising was “clearly false and misleading, and bordering on deceptive conduct”.
“The statements and advertising give the impression the annual kerbside hard waste collection is ‘free’,” Ms Reilly said.
“Clearly this is false and untrue; we pay for this in our rates.”
