AN ELECTRICAL fault at a Keilor substation cut power to more than 100,000 homes across the West on Thursday.
The Keilor terminal station is owned by SP Ausnet and provides electricity to homes and businesses across Victoria.
At around 4.20pm, the fault was uncovered, obliging distributors Powercor and Jemena to cut power to much of the West, as well as Woodend, Gisborne, Macedon, Sunbury, Kyneton, and Lancefield.
Sunshine, St Albans, Caroline Springs and Hillside were all affected by the black-out. Crews were able to restore power across the network by 6pm.
Powercor spokesman Damien Batey said the fault had been caused by overuse.
“We were advised that there wasn’t enough of an electrical supply to share around the system,” Mr Batey said. “Some (of the blackouts) lasted around eight minutes and it varied up an hour and 40 minutes at the latest.”
The outages affected traffic lights and trains, with services limited on lines across the West.
