A say in JPs’ future

By Belinda Nolan
BRIMBANK residents are being invited to have their say on the future of Justices of the Peace.
The Victorian Government is conducting a review of the role JPs play in the justice system and is calling on the community to contribute by making a submission.
The review is one of several measures after a scandalous Ombudsman’s report into Brimbank Council exposed a culture of misconduct that implicated councillors, MPs and a local JP.
Former Mayor Natalie Suleyman’s father Hakki was sensationally stripped of his office and sacked from his position in Planning Minister Justin Madden’s office after the Ombudsman found he had used his position to inappropriately influence the council.
The report also found Mr Suleyman was able to become a JP, despite an earlier criminal conviction.
Attorney-General Rob Hulls decided to review the role of JPs, amid claims Mr Suleyman’s role in the Ombudsman’s report had dampened public confidence in the office.
To make a submission to the review online or view the consultation paper, visit www.justice.vic.gov.au/JP Review.
Written submissions can be sent to the Honorary Justice Office, Department of Justice, GPO Vox 4356.
Submissions close Friday 30 October. For more information call 8361 7133.
