The council and police have launched a new campaign targeting hoon hotspots to stop irresponsible drivers from using Brimbank streets as an informal drag racing arena.
Under the new plan, the council will write to residents who live in areas frequently used by hoons, asking them to help keep streets safe by reporting dangerous drivers.
The campaign comes as statistics reveal more than 90 cars were impounded under hoon laws by Brimbank Police this year.
Between January and August 94 cars were impounded for a range of offences including burnouts, speeding, careless driving, evading police and driving while disqualified.
The Brimbank Hoonline received almost 2000 calls between April 2005 to February this year, resulting in 87 offenders being taken to court and 21 penalty notices issued.
A flurry of tip-offs also led to 86 offenders receiving warning letters and a further 75 being visited by police.
The council is urging residents to unite against hoons by recording details of offenders, including the make of the car, time of the incident and any damage caused.
Anyone who has witnessed hoon driving can contact the Crime Stoppers Hoon Line on 1800 333 000.
