Workers shirty over clothing

By Belinda Nolan
BRIMBANK Council staff held a rally last week to protest against what they have labelled unhealthy working conditions.
About 60 outdoor workers staged a public meeting outside the Keilor Municipal offices on Thursday, amid growing fears for their occupational health and safety.
The employees claim they are being forced to wear protective clothing that puts their health at risk, causing overheating, rashes and other medical problems.
Doris Cunningham, the council’s general manager of corporate services said the council believed that long sleeves and pants were practical to protect employees from skin cancer. Ms Cunningham said the council had consulted with both employees and the union regarding the uniform requirements and would be willing to meet to discuss the matter.
