MATESHIP is what it’s all about for members of the Rosamond Bowls Club ahead of the coming season.
Unlike a number of other division one sides, the club doesn’t pay any of its players and is always locked in a battle to compete with some of the cashed up clubs in the area.
One thing they do have though is a squad of players who are unwavering in commitment to the Rosamond Bowls Club and who are hell bent on ensuring they will not be relegated this season.
Going into a season under pressure is nothing new for the tight-knit group at Rosamond, in fact it’s more like par for the course.
“Not much has changed over the off-season. Everyone is still predicting for us to get relegated and yet we are still here,” club president Steve Fowler said.
“We haven’t really had anyone leave in the break but we haven’t really picked anyone up either. A lot of our players would have knocked back money to play elsewhere though and it’s great we have been able to hang onto those guys.”
Last year the Rosamond Premier side finished in seventh position on the ladder and were part of a log jam of sides that could have qualified for finals.
Taking the next step and making finals this year is already on the agenda.
“We have just missed finals twice in the last few seasons and this year we are hoping to be right up there and give ourselves every chance,” Fowler said.
“If we don’t make finals then the next goal will be to not be relegated.
“We have a very tough start to the season with our first four matches being against last year’s top four sides. If we could win two of those games I’d be happy. However, if we don’t win any all is not lost for the season.”
Fowler has identified David Zitter as the player he expects to have a big year on the greens.
“We lost a few games by small margins last year. To win those game that are close… we just need to keep pushing ourselves. I don’t think there is anything specifically we can do,” he said.
Rosamond are always on the lookout for new members. They have three sides, Premier, division three and division nine and will need some help filling the division nine team.
“If you’re anything above div three you’re a chance to play premier league. It’s a good friendly club, friendly environment. I love the club. I have been there for eight and a half years,” Fowler said.
