GREEN-thumbed thieves were thwarted in an attempt to rob Wombat Gully plant farm at Hoppers Crossing during a midnight break-in earlier this month.
The company’s improved security system activated alarms and cameras after two men cut through a wire fence, clambered over some large potted plants, and tried to smash the window into the office.
The would-be burglars ran away, leaving only some minor damage.
The 21 May break-in was the third for the year at Wombat Gully’s Hoppers Crossing location, said the company’s marketing coordinator Simon Andrews.
In January, $4000 worth of pots, pumps and tools were damaged, and in March, the nursery suffered $1000 worth of damage.
Mr Andrews said staff were getting fed up.
“Nursery stock is expensive and in many cases easy to flog at markets,” he said.
“Some of our staff really love their jobs and plants and they get quite upset when they see innocent plants damaged.”
Police are investigating the latest incident, helped by images from the security cameras.
