A WESTERN suburbs policeman who was killed nine years ago in the line of duty was honoured posthumously with a Victoria Police Star.
Senior Constable Timothy Lewczuk died in May 1997 after he intercepted a dangerously speeding car on the bridge over the Western Freeway in Ardeer while on his way to a domestic dispute.
While questioning the driver, a third car crashed into the back of the police car, throwing the 30-year-old, who had aspired to be a detective, 15 metres to the highway below.
He died at the scene.
Sen Const Lewczuk’s father, Richard, who lives in Hoppers Crossing, accepted the award from Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon last month.
“It doesn’t get much easier over time – it’s always on your mind,” Mr Lewczuk said.
The Police Star was introduced in September to recognise police killed or seriously injured as a result of their association with the Victoria Police.
The Blue Ribbon Foundation also perpetuates the memory of members of the Victoria Police killed on duty.
To date, 150 officers have been killed in Victoria – 30 of them murdered – while serving the community.
