ALBION recorded a gutsy 33-point win over St Albans on Saturday to remain inside the Western Region Football League division one top five.
St Albans took its chances in the opening quarter booting 5.2 to Albion’s inaccurate 1.7 but had squandered the advantage by half time.
A seven-goal second quarter by Albion set the tone for the remainder of the match and once they adjusted their radar they went on to dominate the contest. They led by four points at the half-time break but failed to capitalise on their overall dominance by booting another seven behinds to be 8.14 to 9.4 at the break. But they straightened up in the second half to finish comfortable 19.19.133 to 15.10.100 winners.
Shannon Broadbent was a star for the victors in an eye-catching display while Michael Turner and Blake Richards played their part in the triumph. Jason Butina was a constant threat in attack, booting five goals while Adam Fenton finished with four majors.
For St Albans Michael Agius and Jesse Wells battled hard all day.
Sunshine cruised to a percentage boosting 26.22.178 to 6.6.42 win over Parkside on Saturday. Scott McGoldrick booted five goals and had a ton of the footy. Ashley Comer also played a pivotal role in the win while Jonathon Frost booted four goals.
Hoppers Crossing posted a 114-point win over Glenorden to consolidate its position in the WRFL top five.
It sits in third spot with a four-one win-loss ratio and some impressive form behind it.Hoppers held Glenorden goal-less for the first half, limiting it to just three behinds at the main change while having a healthy 14.10 on the board themselves.
Glenorden showed some spirit to make the game a contest in the second half, but the damage had already been done. They scored seven goals in an improved effort but the final score still read 24.16.160 to 7.4.46 in Hoppers Crossing’s favour.
Brayden Montebruno had a day out up forward for Hoppers Crossing, booting seven goals while Chris Briety, Jackson Litchfield and Michael Frost were also valuable contributors.
Port Melbourne Colts made light-work of Yarraville-Seddon recording a 118-point win.
A 9.4 to 2.2 opening term put paid to any resistance the Eagles were planning on showing.
Star forward Saul Caddy and Jason Clarke both booted five goals for the winners.
Spotswood remain on top of the table following an impressive 22.16.148 to 12.6.78 victory over Altona.
They are a game clear of Sunshine, Hoppers Crossing and Port Melbourne Colts, who all sit equal on points in second spot.
