WERRIBEE resident Nathan Batley had a unique childhood where hunting with tribal elders was as normal as kicking the footy.
Now, 14 years later, Mr Batley will return to Papua New Guinea to live and work with poor and underdeveloped communities as part of an Australian Volunteers International youth program.
The 24-year-old will begin his three-month stay in July along with 11 other Australians.
“It’s going to be awesome,” Mr Batley said.
“The volunteers group do two trips a year so we will be picking up where the last group left off, helping with basic things like hygiene and installing tanks for fresh water, as well as building a school.”
Mr Batley lived in Papua New Guinea for eight years while his father served as a missionary.
His grandfather also fought along the Kokoda trail in World War II.
“I feel privileged to have grown up there, ” he said. “It definitely helped shape who I am now.”
Mr Batley will live in extremely remote areas during his stay, so remote, in fact, that volunteers need to hike along the Kokoda trail after being flown in by helicopter.
“I’ve done a bit of hiking so it shouldn’t be that bad,” he said.
The concreter and part-time comedian said he was excited about making a difference in people’s lives, as well as his own.
“I went through a bit of a lull last year where I was bored and restless,” he said.
“This really feels like it is a step forward and will hopefully open the door to similar opportunities in the future.”
Before he can begin his adventure, Mr Batley needs to raise more than $6000 for travel insurance, airfares, food, building materials and more.
Mr Batley and two other Melbourne volunteers have been hard at work organising a “Dress like a rock star” fundraiser at the Iceberg Bar in Williamstown on Thursday 9 March.
The night will feature live music from local artists, raffles, giveaways and a memorabilia auction including three signed AFL jumpers and an autographed Cat Empire poster.
“I will be going Jimmy Hendrix style,” said Mr Batley
“It should be a great night.”
