Council plans

WYNDHAM City Council will consider building a community hub in Truganina if it can persuade the State Government to revise the structural plan for the area.
The hub could include a shopping centre, community centre, medical clinic and possibly a school.
But the council needs to garner land earmarked for industrial development, under the State Government’s 2005 Wyndham Growth Area Plan, before plans for a community hub can be considered.
The council decided at its meeting last Monday to write to the State Government requesting a revision of the Wyndham Growth Area Plan.
The council wants to push the boundary between the industrial and residential area back by 100 hectares to make more room for residential developments.
Council proposes that the existing boundary between the two areas at Dohertys Creek be moved back to Leakes and Palmers roads.
Council’s strategic planner Dean Ellis said in a report that it was necessary to have a sufficient population size in Truganina to support a community hub.
The report also said it was necessary to assess the future of a biosite in Truganina that was potentially at risk from residential expansion.
The biosite covers 56 hectares and contains native flora that has national and regional significance.
The council intends to determine the biosite’s significance but Mr Ellis says in his report it would be an issue that the Department of Sustainability and Environment and Environment Australia would need to resolve.
Councillor Bob Fairclough, who represents Truganina Ward, said it was important that care be taken where the boundary was made.
He said sufficient industrial land was needed to support employment.
“There is a definite need for providing employment to the people that live in the area,” he said.
“It will save travel into the city and relieve traffic congestion on the West Gate bridge.
“We have to be careful where we make the boundary…there is concern about leaving enough of a gap between residential and industrial areas.”
He said residents needed to be protected from industrial pollution.
“Council’s preference is the Leakes Rd boundary as it’s a major road. Hopefully the State Government will go along with the Leakes Rd idea.”
