ALTONA has the upper hand after a superior performance with bat and ball in its round-six encounter with Yarraville in the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association.
The A’s, fresh from a morale-boosting victory over Williamstown last week, managed to recover despite compiling a first innings score of only 182.
A half century from skipper David Wolfe (68) was the highlight of the day for the batting side.
Yarraville’s turn at bat in the latter stages of the day started disappointingly, with Altona breaking through to leave the visitors 2/27 at stumps.
Despite the lost wickets, Yarraville will take solace in its run-making ability, because the first XI is second on the league table for runs scored this season.
In other Sub District games, Werribee showed no fear against the unbeaten Melton, cracking 289 on the first day at home.
A confident knock of 90 runs from Patrick Eckel was the backbone of the innings, as Werribee took advantage of the full 80 overs.
Melton’s Heath Pritchard provided the most difficulty for the batsmen, snaring 4/55.
At Brighton Beach, Williamstown’s bowlers have the job ahead of them after their side made only 145 in the first innings.
Shaun Borlase was the only Williamstown batsman to break the shackles, hitting 40 runs at number four, before Brighton batted for 15 overs and ended the day at 1/35.
