PARKING alternatives to help reduce traffic congestion in the business district of Yarraville have been highlighted in the Yarraville Village Traffic Management and Urban Design Improvements Study.
Sheoak Ward councillor Janis Rossiter applauded the report that was released last Tuesday.
“I am very pleased, the consultants have done a lot of work and gone about it sensibly,” she said. “Comments and questions about the local area traffic management works are ones that I get constantly from traders and other residents.”
Cr Rossiter said she was pleased with the suggestion that part of the goods yards in Woods St, near the train station, should be utilised for parking.
“I was a little bit concerned about that because there was a basket ball ring there,” she said.
“But the council officers say that they can fence off the area so that the young people can still use the basketball courts.
“We just moved the fence back a bit so it is easier for them park off the street.”
Another issue raised in the report is whether to make Anderson St footpaths disability compliant.
However, if the streets are widened on-street parking spaces would be lost.
Cr Rossiter said it was likely that residents would not want the footpaths widened.
This was “even though people are concerned about lack of parking and the difficulties in getting down Anderson St”.
Cr Rossiter will make an appearance in Anderson St on 14 October, between 10am and noon, to urge residents to read the study.
