THE new “catch-and-release” method encouraged by the Werribee South Fishing Club in its third annual Bream Classic fishing competition held last weekend is a good sign for the future of the sport, says club spokesman Phil Walters.
Almost half the anglers chose to release fish.
The event was held in the Werribee River, with about 40 anglers ignoring gloomy weather forecasts to compete.
Andrew Bonnici from Hoppers Crossing enjoyed early success on Friday night with several bream to half a kilo.
By late Saturday afternoon, anglers were catching bigger fish, biting mainly on fresh tube worms.
Andy Dinh of Altona Meadows won the junior championship with his 470-gram catch.
Saturday night saw the best fishing.
The Hajnal family from Werribee South showed their fishing skills with daughter Nicole bagging the overall competition winner, a 795-gram beauty.
