New skills an adventure

By Ann Marie
YOU’RE never too old to learn new things.
That’s the philosophy of nearly 200, mainly retired Wyndham residents who consider learning a life-long activity.
For members of U3A, or University of the Third Age, every day brings a new learning or teaching adventure.
Their weekly courses include history, needlecraft, bridge, music appreciation, yoga, Italian, French and German, as well as a variety of topical discussions.
Since the teachers are all volunteers, and usually members of the organisation, the annual membership fee is only $25, and most courses are free.
Club president Alex Bain said: “The goal is learning for the pleasure and satisfaction it gives.”
No qualifications are needed, and there are no exams or certificates. Courses are held at a variety of community centres across Wyndham.
The U3A organisation began in France in the 1970s, and has since spread world-wide.
The name “university” was chosen to reflect the medieval origin of a university as a community of scholars, and "third age," because it follows the first two stages of life: youth, then work or home-making.
The Wyndham group is holding its enrolment day at Werribee’s Old Shire Office on Watton St from 9.30am to noon on Thursday 25 January. The first term starts on 5 February.
