WHEN the Werribee YMCA began to question why its over 55s were not showing up for their regular exercise classes during school holidays, they had no idea the answer would lead to a new fitness trend.
The Ballan Rd club has now introduced exercise classes for grandparents and grandkids in a move that keeps their classes full and meets its aim to strengthen family relationships.
YMCA chief executive Peter Burns said he did not realise how many active nans and pops cared for their grandkids over school holidays, while parents worked.
“We didn’t want our members to neglect their own fitness, so we came up with idea of getting the generations active together. The response has been fantastic – both the kids and grandparents just love it.”
The Pryme Movers and Grandkids classes will be held on Tuesday 3 and 10 April from 10am to 11am.
Classes are a mix of circuit training, cardio sessions and games for the young ones, and strength training and stretching for grandparents.
There is no cost for children from 3 to 15, who want to “work out” beside their grandparents.
A complimentary morning tea will follow the sessions.
