ROGER Howe says he has a national outlook with a local focus.
The computer specialist took on the goliath task at the last federal election of running for the Australian Democrats against Labor golden girl Julia Gillard.
The Truganina resident won about 4 per cent of the vote. He also ran locally in 2003, and won about 10 per cent.
“A safe seat equals federal neglect,” he said.
Mr Howe’s background includes more than a decade working with the State Government in housing, a job that reflected a strong sense of social justice.
Some of Mr Howe’s ideas – such as providing free kindergartens and raising taxfree thresholds are a federal responsibility – but, he said, his extensive service to the community reflected how he made local contributions.
Those commitments include membership of the Hoppers Crossing Apex club, local sporting groups, and as a volunteer computer tutor at the Werribee Community Centre.
“I believe if you want something out of the community, you’ve got to be willing to put something in.”
