WYNDHAM City Council has approved what one councillor described as the “single most important strategy ever” about its medium-term growth.
The State Government’s Wyndham Growth Area Plan is a detailed report of where houses, commercial centres and transport corridors should be built over the next 15 or so years.
Councillor Henry Barlow said the report was absolutely critical to the area’s future.
It says that by 2031, Wyndham will need to house up to 96,000 additional residents, 45,000 extra households and provide 63,000 new jobs.
The plan targets Wyndham Vale as one of the main areas for growth.
Councillor Cynthia Manson questioned why that area was identified when it was flood-prone and had inadequate infrastructure.
“Unless we want to see Queensland-style houses on stilts, we have to be careful until major infrastructure is in place,” she said.
In the council’s response to the plan, strategic planning manager John Moore said a middle ring road from the Princes Fwy through Manor Lakes to Tarneit might need to be built before land in Tarneit West was developed.
Councillor Leigh Barrett called on the State Government to help fund such major projects.
