ALTONA is officially back on track in the Royal Victorian Bowls Association after a brilliant win over top four team Yarraville/Footscray.
The reigning premier has hit back hard after a below par start to the season, winning four of its last five matches.
The win over neighbour Yarraville/Footscray – by a massive 28 shots – was perhaps its best of the season yet.
Only one of the four rinks had its colours lowered on the afternoon, with Wayne Roberts losing out to Nick McIntyre. But the biggest surprise came in the match-up between Altona’s Paul Dorgan and Footscray’s Ray Morrissey, with Dorgan’s rink triumphant by an incredible 25 shots.
Altona’s win lifted the team to fifth on the table, just one point from Essendon.
Yarraville/Footscray retained third place on 101 points, 22 behind second-placed Glen Eira McKinnon.
Meanwhile, Newport claimed an upset win over high-flier Keilor in Division One Section Two on Saturday. Keilor had won seven of nine matches before the weekend, including a comfortable 13-shot win when the two teams met in the opening round of the season.
But Newport lifted for the occasion, winning by 20 shots.
