ONE of Williamstown Football Club’s favourite sons has called it a day.
Long-serving captain and three-time best and fairest Brad Lloyd has announced his retirement from the club. After 13 seasons, Lloyd, 31, made the tough decision to pave the way for the next generation of Williamstown players. The Victorian Football League journeyman plans to finish his career elsewhere, but thought the time was right to part ways with Williamstown.
“The club is going down the path of development and will be giving opportunities to the younger blokes coming through,” he said. “I’ve had a pretty good run down there, so there’s some really good players coming through that deserve an opportunity.”
Lloyd is one of the most decorated Williamstown players of the modern era. He was captain from 2003-06, won the Gerry Callahan medal in 2000, 2001 and 2004 and led Williamstown to the premiership in 2003.
“The premiership is the number one in my mind, but I’ve met some fantastic people over the years and have got the opportunity to play with some champions like Tony Pastore, Saade Ghazi and Troy West,” Lloyd said.
“I’ve made some really good friendships, and Williamstown feels like my home town now.”
The club has also been home to Lloyd’s family, including brother Simon, who also played for the Seagulls.
