Football and cricket enthusiasts turned out last Wednesday for the official opening of the Dunnings Rd Sports Pavilion – the first facility of its kind in the area.
The $1.17 million building comprises two change rooms with showers and toilets, a kitchen with servery, umpires’ change rooms, public toilets, storage room and covered areas for spectators.
“The kids certainly gave it a good look over,” Point Cook Junior Football Club president Steven Ward said.
“We have 11 junior footy teams, ranging in age from seven to 16, so there’s certainly a need for this facility.”
Wyndham mayor Shane Bourke said the pavilion would cater for the increasing number of children in the Point Cook area keen on playing football and cricket.
“Council has worked closely with the representatives of the Point Cook Football Club and the recently formed Point Cook Cricket Club to make sure we had a sporting facility that would meet the needs of their junior players,” he said.
Mr Ward said the kids looked forward to making the ground their home base.
“For three years they haven’t had a home ground and now it’s finally happened. They’re itching to get in there,” he said.
