Help for newcomers

URGENT help is needed to clothe new Karen refugee migrants settling in Wyndham.
Hoppers Crossing Apex Club president Rita O’Sullivan said families are in urgent need of blankets, winter clothing, especially small sized jackets and coats, and rice.
The refugees often arrive in Melbourne with only the clothes they are wearing, and are not acclimatised to cold winter, having fled northern Thailand and Burma.
“A small group of volunteers have exhausted all the charity stores, and taken everything they can … but blankets are hard to come by,” said Ms O’Sullivan. She said the Karen people were generally of smaller build, with the biggest she has encountered a size 12.
The Apex Club will pick up items from homes in Wyndham. For more information call 9748 2027.
