HAVING always been a bit of a fighter – sometimes I won, most times I lost – I am full of admiration for long-time Werribee Park stalwart Graeme Box who has his own battle going on needing doses of radiation to set him right.
GB, as we all know him, has always enjoyed a fight and this one is no exception.
His latest email communique to his many friends really shows what a strong person he is and I am sure many of us can take heart from his positive attitude.
Hurry up and get better, GB. That game at Kingston Heath still stands!

MANY thanks to everyone who phoned and emailed me with their congratulations on my winning the best column in a Provincial or Suburban Newspaper at the Australian Golf Media Awards in Sydney.
I am very thankful to all of you for your kind thoughts and good wishes.

IT WILL be a big day at Werribee Park Golf Club this coming Sunday when the club celebrates its 30th birthday.
It seems like only yesterday since many of us stood around a windswept first tee – minus the pro-shop – and watched the then governor of Victoria, Sir Henry Winneke, drive the first ball and officially open the club.
The highlight of next Sunday’s celebrations will be a three-hole exhibition match between Werribee Park professionals David Wren and Marke Miller and course designer Kevin Hartley.
The “Dart” may not have the driving length of Wren and Miller, but I will back his accuracy against them – he did not earn that nickname for nothing.

LIKE many people who play and administer the game of golf in this country, I was deeply saddened last week to learn of the untimely death of Pam Giles, wife of Victorian Golf Association councillor and Goonawarra Golf Club long-serving member Pat.
The ultimate tribute paid to the Giles family was by the number of people who attended Pam’s funeral at Sunbury.
To Pat, Adam and Patrick Jr, I offer the deepest condolences of everyone who knew and respected Pam and indeed the Giles family. We really do mourn the loss of a great lady.

TWO nominations for the Star Golfer of the Month this week both come from the Kooringal Golf Club in Altona, which is undergoing vast changes at the moment.
The first is to acknowledge a hole in one last week by long-standing member Brian Fowler, and the second is Matt Drew’s effort in winning the Curlewis Open with a two round score of 142, two under the card.
If you would like to nominate anyone for the Star Golfer of the Month Award or have any news about an on-course feat or something going on at your club, then contact me on 9749 2481, mobile 0409 381 192 or by email beggolf@optusnet.com.au
